Where is the appendix? A Comprehensive Guide to Its Anatomy and Role

What is the appendix, and where is the appendix?

The large intestine has an outpocketing called the appendix. It is a tube in shape and is a branch of the large intestine starting at the main leading piece that is referred to as the caecum. The appendix acts like a residual part of the large intestine that was serving as a component in the immune system of the baby, but over time, it becomes irrelevant. Where is the appendix? An appendix that is not infected does no harm to the human body.

Where is the appendix?

  • The appendix is positioned at the lower right side of the abdomen.
To give a general idea of it, we may say that it is right side down as far as the umbilicus and a little higher than the pelvic bone.
Medically it is identified by means of a midpoint line between the umbilicus and the right anterior superior larger bone and also by touching the umbilicus and the anterior larger bone with a little finger and a thumb, respectively; the place where the fingers cross is the McBurney point. This is where the base of the appendix is found. This is significant in a surgical sense.

What is appendicitis?

Appendicitis refers to the infected appendix, and this happens because of infection caused in the appendix by microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc. in this case. Do you know where the appendix is?

Patient Complaints:

Appendicitis is a pathological situation when, under the influence of certain factors, a patient has the following complaints:

  • Side pain on the right lower end of the abdomen
  • Pain can take the form of cramping pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Fever
  • Balance and nausea issues
Coughing, sneezing, wheezing can result to worsening pain in the appendix location
  • Straining while the bowel movement
  • Dark/black-coloured stools
  • Incontinence of urine
Appendicitis In the patient that presents, the pain that he experiences is unbearable, and it is acute within 24-72 hours, or 1-3 days.

What is used to determine whether a patient is experiencing appendicitis or not?

  • On the side of the doctor, the physical examination will lead to the localization of McBurney’s point by the physician using it, after which tenderness will be determined by skin pressure in case of pain on deep palpation; then additional examination will take place, and the history of the patient will be pursued.
  • Imaging studies such as CT scans, abdominal X-rays, MRI, and so on, but the best test to diagnose appendicitis is the multi-detector CT scan (MDCT).
  • CBC report to indicate elevated WBC count that is a sign of active infection.
    Appendicitis misdiagnosis of illnesses:
Appendicitis can be mixed up with other disorders that include:
  • Bowel disease
  • Indigestion
  • Gas
  • Constipation
  • Enterocolitis
  • Meckel diverticulitis
Is appendicitis a bad condition or not?
Appendicitis does not do any harm. But in case of a burst of appendix due to infection, it may cause conditions as follows:
  • Peritonitis
  • Ascites
  • abscesses
  • Sepsis (a body-wide spread infection)
When left unaccounted for, then they can bring about eventual death.
More than 50% of the people lost their lives prior to the appropriate medical intervention on the appendix. The rates of death after the surgical removal are less than 5% after surgery was conducted to remove the appendix.

Appendix Treatment:

  • Antibiotics (in case the appendicitis pains are relieved by medicine, then there is no reason to undergo surgery)
  • Appendicitis surgery is referred to as appendectomy. It involves a straight forward operation where one cuts on McBurney’s point, and the diseased appendix is taken out. It is an emergency treatment, and the patient draws back into his or her routine life in a period of 2-4 weeks.

What are foods for appendicitis?

Appendicitis is brought about by certain food items, as per research that includes the following:

  • Seeds of the Vegetable and Fruit agents like orange, grape, nut, date, oat, fig, barley, cocoa, cumin, etc.
  • Pre cooked cuisines that are high in fat
